GetReal Labs Emerges From Stealth to Tackle Deepfakes

GetReal Labs, a startup focused on combating malicious manipulated content and deepfakes, on Thursday announced that it has emerged from stealth mode.

Headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., the startup has been incubated for two years by Ballistic Ventures and UC Berkeley Professor Hany Farid, and received additional investment from Venrock.

With automation tools leading to a spike in synthetically generated content on the internet, threat actors are seizing the opportunity for nefarious purposes. GetReal Labs seeks to tackle the issue by authenticating content, detecting deception, and keeping organizations and users worldwide protected from inauthentic profiles on social media, voice scams, manipulated images, and other types of deepfakes.

The company says its advanced authentication and protection capabilities translate into real-time detection and deep understanding of the risks faced, support forensic analysis, and can help organizations make confident decisions.

GetReal is on a mission to help financial organizations with fraud prevention and communication security, media organizations with verification, and government agencies with maintaining national security.

“The inception of GetReal stems from years of watching AI trends and the democratization of its systems and tools. With a significant amount of all online content soon to be AI-generated, and first-hand accounts of how nefarious actors are exploiting advancements, we’re at the juncture where GetReal is critical,” Ballistic Ventures co-founder and GetReal Labs co-founder and interim CEO Ted Schlein.

GetReal also announced that Jim Brennan, who held various leadership positions at IBM Security, Red Hat, SecureWorks, and the US Department of Defense, has been appointed Chief Product and Technology Officer.
