Virginia-based furniture manufacturer and retailer Bassett Furniture was recently targeted in a ransomware attack that caused significant disruptions, including in the company’s manufacturing facilities.
The company revealed this week in a filing with the SEC that it detected unauthorized access to its IT systems on July 10.
Bassett Furniture said the threat actor disrupted its business operations by encrypting “some data files”.
“As a result of the Company’s containment measures, which included shutting down some systems, the Company has not been, and, as of the date of this Report is not operating its manufacturing facilities,” Bassett said.
“The Company’s retail stores and e-commerce platform are open, and customers are able to place orders and purchase available merchandise; however, the Company’s ability to fulfill orders is currently impacted,” it added.
In many ransomware attacks, cybercriminals steal data in addition to encrypting files in an effort to pressure the victim into paying a ransom.
Bassett said, however, that “it does not believe personal information from consumers was compromised”.
“As of the date of this filing, the incident has had and is reasonably likely to continue to have a material impact on the Company’s business operations until recovery efforts are completed. The Company has not yet determined whether the incident is reasonably likely to materially impact the Company’s financial condition or results of operations,” the company said.
No known ransomware group appears to have taken credit for the attack at the time of writing.
Bassett has roughly 100 dedicated retail locations in the United States and Puerto Rico.
